Legend has it that this turn-of-the-century brick building was constructed with a horse stable to accommodate L.A.'s thriving carriage trade. In the ’50s, the Wolff family purchased the property and started a catering business. In 1991, Groundwork leased the building and installed its first coffee roaster under an old oven hood. For the next ten years, we continued to roast coffee in the space.

Built into the North Hollywood Historic Train Depot as part of the restoration of this registered State Historic Landmark Building, this cafe brings back to life a longtime hub of the neighborhood. Built in the early 1890s, the depot is situated at the intersection of the Red Line and Orange Bus Line — two of the city’s most-traveled public transportation routes. It’s a warm, welcoming venue where residents and commuters can enjoy one of life’s simple pleasures: a delicious cup of coffee and good company.

Originally built for Wells Fargo Bank, this location is one of the oldest multistory buildings in Hollywood. At one time or another, it saw use as a hair salon, drugstore, and advertising agency, prior to its latest incarnation as a Groundwork coffeehouse. (Yes, we’re still looking for the vault. Fascinating tidbit: This historic structure houses one of the earliest elevators installed west of the Mississippi. The sliding-cage contraption is still in operation and carries tenants all the way up to three rooftop apartments, which offer incredible views of the beach and boardwalk.

Our 5,000-square-foot headquarters sits inconspicuously among the parking lots, loading docks, and near-constant truck traffic of North Hollywood’s Cleon Avenue. A closer look, however, tells a more colorful story. Solar panels cover the structure’s roof, drawing enough energy to power the entire building. Pallets of freshly delivered green coffee appear briefly in the sunlight as they’re whisked into the building’s loading bay on the tines of whirring forklifts.

Inside, steel racks filled with cases stretch to the ceiling. The cases hold every imaginable product necessary to stock a well-run coffeehouse. Along one long wall, a row of towering silos hold more than 25 varieties of green coffee beans. And in the middle, two massive coffee roasters function as the beating heart of the entire building. These 70-kilo, low-emission machines are a marvel of old and new technology — a fitting blend of the traditional and the innovative.

This is the Groundwork Roastery, where every day a battalion of employees makes use of the building’s every conceivable nook and cranny to produce, pack, and ship coffee and tea for our customers. The cupping room does triple-duty as a training center and lunchroom. The tearoom presents a dizzying array of colors, scents, and textures as fragrant teas, herbs, and spices are blended by hand.

Coffee roasting can be a fairly violent process in which green coffee beans are exposed to temperatures approaching 500 degrees. There are flames and smoke, and noise, and a lot of sweat and, well . . . you get the picture. But at Groundwork the job is half the fun. The other half is drinking the fruit of our labor.

In 2016 Groundwork acquired Kobos Coffee, Portland’s original micro-roaster. We have since moved to a new 12,000-square-foot facility, located in the heart of Hosford Abernethy, can produce more than 5,000 pounds of coffee on a single shift (that’s 1.3 million pounds a year).
